Why is Metformin better for Diabetes type 2?

Both my endocrinologist and doctor prefer that I take this instead of glyburide or gliclazide because its ‘better’…how so? I’ll ask them next time I see them but for now, I’m just curious. http://bit.ly/nJMtF6
