What is a moist heating pad I could use for sciatica?

A friend uses coldpack and hotpad alternately. Is this good for sciatica? I am doing exercises the doctor recommended. Can’t afford massages, treatments with acupuncture etc. (No Medical Insurance) http://bit.ly/qqLYfA
